What are we leaving behind in 2023? We're leaving ignorance and we're leaving behind the inaccessibility of information on the internet.
We have to face the facts: to find any information online, you have to already know what you're looking for. You need jargon, you need keywords, hashtags, website links, and sometimes even usernames. This creates an immense barrier to entry for people who are new to navigating all the different subcultures in the various pockets of the internet. That barrier also acts as a cloak for abusers, who aspire to manipulate young and/or vulnerable audience members.
We're talking about children entering the internet, not understanding a pickle from a popsicle, and being force fed fetish content about Spiderman and Elsa. We're talking about teenagers looking for memes and finding animal gore and pictures of dead bodies. We're talking about nazis infiltrating the homes and minds of young people before than can even gather a concept of their own youth.
We need social media archives. We need centers of information, vetted by knowledgeable consumers of internet content for the vulnerable members of our online communities. This is serious. The fate of our society lies in our ability to imagine new uses of the internet together and with intentionality. Archive everything you love with the people you admire, and create whatever your heart desires.
